This is the Lil Abner model. I’m working on the pieces for the Office, lab, and hall and will post pics of those sets as well. Forgive the quality of the picture—- i used my mac.

Li’l Abner Prelim sketches

Above are the preliminary sketches for lil abner. For the show we’ll build two portals on stage. The most upstage portal will be black with a white “frame” border. The DS portal and proscenium will have frames with different color treatments on them as though the stage was part of a strip. Between the Pros and Portal 1 there will be a 4’ platform that runs all the way across. DS of this platform is a raked plat that meets flush with the thrust. US of the platform is a ramp that leads SL. Behind portal 2, there is ground row made up of three sections: two static mountains and a moving capitol flat. There are two wagons that travel on the 4’ wide deck. There may be a couple of other things that we fly in (like the seal or something additional for the lab). I haven’t thought of the ballroom scene too much but I think we can fly in some sort of flat chandelier and maybe some party type decorations. I’m not sure we need the curtain for this show.

I drew the more refined sketch with watercolors, but i think the final set will have more graphic rather than fluid gradients like we’ve been talking about w/ Lichenstein’s work.

Wonderland
I’m playing with the idea that the entire floor is an elevated raked stage with lots of traps (the floor will be reused for Evil Dead, except we’ll make it flat and keep most of the traps). The floor looks like a giant door, which resembles a door seen at the beginning of the show. The transportation happens as Andy tries to open the preshow door and it flies/breaks away and he is transported to wonderland. This is all assuming the transition happens via a door! It doesn’t have to happen that way, but I thought it would be a cool way to tie the real and fake world together.
Wonderland is a dark world. I like to think of it as extremely geometric. There is nothing organic about the world. Colors are vibrant but very fake.
The premise of the door is that it is the source of all the scenery. The panels may open up as traps. The handle doubles as a seat. Perhaps the entire floor hinges up to reveal a second skin to the door. The door knocker rises to reveal the thrown room of the red queen (with playing card curtain flying in). Maybe the entire door has a glow to it.
I also thought it would be cool if the set was a collection of doors instead of a single door. Each door can lead to a different section of wonderland.
The avatar/glow in the dark idea: I think we might be able to choreograph that with projections. And glow in the dark paint of course. Do we have a full stage scrim?
Anyway, I have other sketches but they didn’t scan very well.

Preliminary Evil Dead Sketch
Main features:
- An entire deck that is elevated to provide trap opportunities throughout the cabin.
- Moose head on USR wall.
- Still needs a way to incorporate the bookcase
- Kitchen is visible through the more US opening.
- Tree crashes through SR window
- Bear/animal rug can come alive if we want.
- Exposed framing for the deck for cool lighting opportunities
Still need to figure out:
- Bookcase
- Re-thinking how the kitchen works with the layout.
